Sacramento County deputies are examining a shooting that broke out Saturday evening at Howe Community Park at the moment law enforcement were clearing a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
How It Started
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue just after half past six in the evening after obtaining information of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Following that, a second call came in regarding a reported Arden Arcade Sacramento crime 2026 physical confrontation breaking out at the location.
Air support flew over the park but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Despite this, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had gathered without authorization without official sanction.
The Shooting Itself
Officers moved to clear the area by setting up around the park's perimeter and issuing commands over loudspeakers commanding the assembled crowd to disperse at once. Nearly 15 minutes were given for individuals to vacate.
It was during this dispersal that 20 to 25 gunshots were discharged. Gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Officers immediately began searching for victims.
Those Who Were Hit
Altogether, four gunshot victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — comprising three men and one woman all believed to be in their mid to late twenties — were brought to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Emergency physicians confirmed that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. In a positive development, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Metro Fire Sacramento arrived on scene and helped care for those who had been shot before they were taken to the hospital.
The Investigation
The center of the incident seemed to have unfolded on the Cottage Way side of the park close to the Home Depot located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Investigators recovered additional spent rounds scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were also found in the wrought iron fence near the Home Depot. These findings pointed to that a shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. The store itself was temporarily locked down during the incident. CSI investigators and detectives stayed at the location late into the evening.
Suspects Detained
Details gathered through law enforcement radio communications confirmed that a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in Solano County California. Four people were held for questioning. Sheriff's units were en route to collect those detained to pick up those detained for investigation. Video that was reviewed made clear that two shooters had been involved.
